Workstations in ACTION this week! A great way for students to practice skills and work independently.

 Context Clues Workstation.. What does the unknown mean?

Our stations for the week are;
  • Fluency- Students practice reading a passage, record themselves on the IPAD, listen and chart their correct words and their errors. They complete a self reflection and a goal sheet.
5th grade Goal is to read 125 words per minute, with expression and accuracy! (No "robot reading" or "rapid reading", reading should sound like talking. Better fluency will increase their reading comprehension.)
  • Vocabulary- Students practice weekly vocabulary. They have 9 activities to choose from for the week.
  • Guided Reading - Students read in a small group with me. This week's story was A Day at the Beach. Our comprehension skill was; compare and contrast.
  • Independent Reading - Students read a book on their level. It is our goal to complete one chapter book per month.
  • Context Clues- This is such an important skill for students.  I choose really hard words this week to make as the "unknown" word in each sentence. Students must identify the context clues that help to determine the meaning of the word, then infer the meaning, and lastly check to see if they were correct. This station is done on the promethean board. (Students love this.. because they get control of the board!)

July 24, 2014

     Summer break is coming to an end and the start of a new school is about to begin. Even though I have had a fun filled summer with my husband and two kids, I always love the beginning of a school year. I have been working hard to get the classroom ready, and I am excited to meet my 26 new 5th graders. I hope to meet parents and students at Open House on Monday, July 28, (beginning at 6:30). Feel free to bring your school supplies, find your desk and locker and take a tour of the classroom and school.  Don't forget to visit the booths in the gym also!

     Looking forward to the first day of school July 31!
